Welcome to the Near Northwest Neighborhood
This charming neighborhood is incredibly varied with tree lined avenues, historic homes and a rich full history. We have Victorians from the 1880’s, Bungalows from the 1920’s and American Four Squares at every turn. The architecture will impress you and the reasonable home prices will delight you.
The neighborhood has four historic districts, each one featuring homes of different genres and architectural styles. We have historic Leeper Park with scenic views of the St. Joseph River, a jungle gym, tennis center and perfect picnic spots.
There are two public elementary schools, Madison and Muessel, and a private school, Holy Cross, within the neighborhood. Portage Avenue features a grocery store, pharmacy and hardware store just a short distance from your home.
The Near Northwest is at the edge of bustling downtown South Bend; its restaurants, museums and cultural life are just steps away. And we are just minutes from the University of Notre Dame, Holy Cross, St. Mary’s, IU South Bend and Ivy Tech with all of their educational opportunities, sporting events and additional cultural events.
As of 2021, we have two new businesses in the NNN.
Botany at 909 Portage believes that “Gardeners will save the world.” Botany has a shop at 909 and offers a variety of gardening related services, opportunities and interactions.
No. 6 is a restaurant now open at the corner of Lindsay and Portage Avenue in a converted historic firehouse. They recommend we “Eat. Drink. Relax.” See their web page for hours and offerings.
The Near Northwest has one of the most active neighborhood organizations in the City. Our numerous events are a perfect place to meet the neighbors and make new friends. Our many volunteers are committed to our projects both civic and social.
